Fashion Beneath the Skin: A Virtual Journey Through History
Fashion Beneath the Skin: A Virtual Journey Through History
From June 26 to 28, Sound & Vision invites you to explore the evolution of clothing from the 18th to the 20th centuries, at Beeld & Geluid, Hilversum. With the installation Fashion Beneath the Skin, visitors can experience historical garments through virtual reality. This unique display brings the development of body image to life in an interactive way. The garments are sourced from the archives of Centraal Museum Utrecht, Kunstmuseum Den Haag, and Zaans Museum, enriched by Sound & Vision’s own collection.
Fashion Beneath the Skin is part of the 5Dculture project. This project explores how museums and archives can use 3D content to create interactive experiences. By digitizing fragile and sometimes even toxic garments, Sound & Vision demonstrates how new technologies can breathe life into historical objects that are rarely exhibited
Johan Oomen, Head of Research and Heritage at Sound & Vision, explains: “We show in this installation how the combination of 3D scanning of heritage objects and virtual reality can enrich the museum experience in an innovative way. We are enormously proud of the collaboration with the Center for Mathematics & Computer Science and the museums that have made this project possible.”
The installation is a prototype, showcasing how two visitors can experience the same VR setup together, in three virtual spaces. The volumetric video setup developed by the Center for Mathematics & Computer Science allows visitors to see themselves and each other in real time within the virtual environment. The ultimate goal is to create a virtual exhibition where visitors can meet at a distance, in different museums, and share the same experience.
